Group Tutorial Prep

What is professional / industrial experience?

  • it is working with / for a client, working to their needs and specifications and to their deadlines.
  • understanding how the design industry is working and where it is going, we need to be aware of what design is right now.
  • gaining and understanding of how a business operates within a company and what you role is within that.
  • as a designer we will always make mistakes, but professional experience will who how to deal with them and more importantly how to learn from them.
  • as a freelancer or an in house designer, you need to have a good variety of contacts who collaboratively can produce the work the client wants.



Why is professional / industrial experience important as part of PPD?

  • experience will give us the head start above the rest to get started in the design industry.
  • hopefully it will give us a clear understanding of which areas of design we are aiming to work with .
  • it keeps us up to date with 'today's' design and how design company's are tackling it and how they are working.
  • we can start to apply what we have learnt on our course to how this will help us to operate in a professional environment.
  • experience can give potential security for a job or if not it can get you in touch with the right people.


How do you gain professional / industrial experience and what form dose it take?


  • getting involved with any live briefs around and any competitions that we find, this is a great way of working to professional standard without having to much to take on at once.
  • gaining any work experience with design company's or freelancers even if its just to see how they work.
  • keep in contact with everyone, keep getting in touch with designers and they will remember you.
  • promoting yourself as a designer, and being confident, having somewhere that people can see you work and what you are recently working on via a blog or website or taking every opportunity or exhibit your work
  • get in contact with graduates in your profession and see where they are at now and see how they got there.


What should you aim to gain from professional / industrial experience?


  • firstly confidence in yourself and in your work, if you don't think you can do it, then why should clients.
  • this will be a priceless experience in the way in which a design company, freelancer works with a client before actually entering the industry permanently, so we can prepare ourselves.
  • we will gain contacts in the design industry that we can get back in touch with.
  • get a very clear understanding of how the industry works and where you fit in.
  • we must gain an understanding of how the design industry can become a career for us, how we can make a living and how to be successful.
